Full Comprehensive Description : |
Get ready for a stampede of girls in cat ears, giant robots, and sword-wielding samurai across three states
this year. That’s right, Animania Festival is back for its fifth year, and this time will be giving fans of anime
plenty to look forward to with a total of five events occurring right throughout the year not only in its home
city of Sydney, but also in Brisbane and Melbourne.
Of these five events, Brisbane and Melbourne will host smaller scale day festivals, while Sydney August will be
workshop-focused (see below for dates). These events will culminate in the popular weekend long event in
October that will cover a wide range of events including panels, markets, competitions and large stage events.
Animania Festival began in Sydney in 2001 and since then has been going strong, creating an event dedicated
solely to the celebration of Japanese animation, better known to fans as anime (from the French for animation),
and comics, manga. The aim of the Festival is to promote and increase awareness of the medium, catering for
both long time “hardcore” fans who were raised on a steady diet of Astro Boy and Sailor Moon, and “newbies”
who have only just seen the Academy Award winning animated feature, Spirited Away.
The love of anime has taken Western media by
storm, reflected not only in the popularity of the
children’s game/cartoon Pokemon, but also in the
success of more mature films such as Ghost in the
Shell and its sequel Innocence, and most recently,
the latest film from acclaimed anime director Hayao
Miyazaki, Howl’s Moving Castle. Anime is more than
children’s cartoons, and not simply a genre. Rather,
it is a medium through which a multitude of genres
are played out, including high school stories, office
dramas, science fiction, epic fantasy, and slapstick
comedy. Although in Japan manga (comics) and
anime (animated shows/films) are simply one
aspect of daily life, in the West it is perhaps one of
the most fast growing pop culture phenomena.
A real testament of the impact of anime in the West is the inclusion of Animania
Festival in the Official Program of the 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Exchange – a year
marking the 30 year anniversary of cultural exchange between Australia and Japan.
This yearlong program endorsed by both embassies in both countries aims to promote
cultural exchange and friendship between the two countries.
