Como House is set in 5 acres of historic gardens, the focus of a much larger estate that was established in 1847. For 95 years, Como was the home of the Armytage family who were prominent graziers and well known members of Melbourne Society. A large number of Armytage family possessions are preserved at Como. Awareness of Colonial, Victorian and Federation periods will be greatly enriched by a visit to Como which reflects changes in society and technology and the development of Victoria in these periods. Programs at Como can provide hands on experiences with household items as students explore the impact of evolving technology and stimulate thinking about social and gender roles, comparing and contrasting the present and past. All programs give students a sense of the everyday life and work of both the family who owned the estate and their house servants. Programs are led by staff and volunteers, many of whom are former teachers. House Tours Explore the Public, Private and Practical parts of Como House with a guide.
