Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre is situated on the edge of Herdsman Lake 15 km west of Perth CBD. The Wildlife Centre provides a unique opportunity for schools and community to interface with the local wetland wildlife for research, extension and education. Community activities include bird walks, information nights, night stalks, wildlife excursions and festivals. These activities aim to provide direct interaction with the natural ecosystem and develop community interest and involvement in the natural environment and wildlife conservation. The Centre Manager is responsible for promoting the Gould League, developing and coordinating the environmental education programs, and for raising awareness of the state's flora, fauna and wildlife conservation. The Centre is available for use as an environmental education and wetland field study centre to demonstrate: How the lake's animals and plants interact. Human impacts on an urban wetland system. How an urban wetland catchment functions. Feeding patterns between organisms. The types of plants and animals in wetlands. The local Nyungar & European settler history of the area. Individuals or groups are welcome to use the wildlife centre and other services including: Living and static displays of ecology. Raised viewing boardwalk. Centre hire for meetings and lectures. Printed matter for educational purposes. Monthly boardwalks. School and group excursions. Activities room. Observation Deck. Outcome-Focused, Action-centred, hands-on activities. There are live animal displays, Swamp BoardWalks and a Bird Observatory.
