Full Comprehensive Description :
5th April 2006 Melbourne Maritime Museum - home of Polly Woodside would like to thank you for your past support in bringing students on education excursions to the ship and museum. We would like to ask you to advise all your staff that the ship and museum will be closed to the public from 30th April until late 2008. This is to allow for the construction of the new Plenary Convention Centre to be built in the area between Polly Woodside and Grimes Bridge. Because of the scale of the redevelopment we have agreed to Multiplex’s request that we close to the public during the construction phase. It would be impracticable to trade through as there would be no visitor facilities and access to the Polly Woodside would be impossible. In return Multiplex has offered to build us a purpose-built museum on the city side of Polly Woodside. This will give Melbourne a high quality maritime museum and the facilities to host temporary and travelling exhibitions. We hope that you will continue your support after 2008 so that future students will be able to enjoy the ship and the new museum that will display our fascinating maritime heritage to even better advantage. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us. Yours sincerely, Ann Gibson Public Programs
