Full Comprehensive Description :

Western Treatment Plant

The Western Treatment Plant was opened in 1897 to address the sewage needs of a growing city. It is now the largest and most environmentally friendly sewage treatment plant in the world.  It is also one of Australia's largest bird sanctuaries, second only to Kakadu National Park.

Over 40,000 people have toured the Western Treatment Plant since 2002 to learn about the plant and the role it plays in providing an essential public health service.  While on the two-hour bus tour, find out how domestic and industrial sewage from Melbourne's northern and western suburbs is treated, learn about our water recycling initiatives and about the recently completed $160 million upgrade to help protect the health of the marine environment by reducing the ammonia in treated effluent by 75%.
